Chapter 25

April 2008

In the end, Serena made up her mind, she just could not put up with any of these anymore, and she planned to ask Sam what really was happening. After school, Sam was again the first to finish packing his stuff and he rushed out of the classroom, this time, Serena followed him immediately. Sam always liked to choose to use the quiet staircase, which was exactly what Serena wanted at that moment, she did not want anyone to hear their conversation, if there would be one.

“Stop, Sam.” Serena said, she ran to him and grabbed hold of his hand. “I said STOP!”

Sam turned around and looked at Serena. His eyes locked with Serena’s.

“What the hell is happening to you? Why are you avoiding me!?” Serena shouted, her anger quickly got the better of her. “Answer me! Don’t act like you didn’t hear me, Sam!”

Sam gazed at her for a few second, “Serena, I…ah…” Sam whispered, but he stopped when he saw Lax coming, “Forget about it.” He said as he shook Serena’s hand off and started to turn away.

“Hey, Sam, wait up!” Lax said, but Sam did not stop, he kept on walking.

Lax walked past Serena and he whispered in her ear, “You are nothing to him, back off.” Serena’s eyes flew from Sam and then to Lax.

She shot him a dead glare and then turned back to Sam and shouted, “What do you mean by FORGET ABOUT IT? Come back! Why can’t you just explain everything to me! Sam Parker! You owe me that much!”

Sam turned as he heard that, he glanced over at her and immediately walked away.

“Could you please stop bothering Sam!?” Lax asked as he swung her around.

“You know nothing about that, shut up.” Serena said as she was walking away.

“You really think I don’t know? I know everything about you, and I think you are nothing but a stupid little girl.” Lax claimed.

“Oh yeah!? All you know is that I feel for Sam, I’m bothering him, you think I’m the one imagining he loves me, right?” Serena yelled.

“They are the truth.” Lax said with a straight face.

“Lax Smith, if you think I’m a nut job and you know that much, then why are you wasting your time talking to this stupid little girl? But I’m telling you, you are so wrong. All you know is just the tiny thing from my side, the surface of this matter! Why don’t you go and do some digging about the core, about the truth from Sam’s side!?” Serena shouted and left. Arguing with Lax was the last thing she felt like doing.

Serena walked along the empty corridor and as she walked pass the washroom, she looked at the mirror that stood next to her, looking straight into her own eyes, she really looked like crap, these days she did not really have any mood to dress herself up, and at that moment, she began to notice the hurt she felt, and the anger dropped away. Serena sobbed, she could not hold it anymore, her heart was so painful, and it was like a thousand knives had pierced her heart.

After Sam walked out on Serena, she had asked Joanna out to stay with her for the entire afternoon, she told Joanna everything, everything single thing about Sam and her. She hoped someone would tell her that everything was just a dream and she was about to wake up.

“He’s not worth it, he always likes to run away from stuff.” Joanna commented.

Serena inhaled and said, “Yeah, I don’t know, I don’t have the faintest idea of what’s going on now!” Serena started to cry again, but she soon choked back tears.

“Hey, look at me; DON’T EVER THINK OF IT EVER AGAIN. SAM IS NEVER WORTH it, well, though I once said I would support you, but whatever, now I won’t, he’s so not worth. OKAY?”

Serena nodded, and said, “But I just don’t understand why Lax and Nancy always have to be in the way!”

“For one, Lax is Sam’s good friend, and for two, Nancy is Sam’s cousin, for sure they want to protect him by hurting you.”

Serena replied with tears glistening in her eyes, “I just want him back, is it too much to ask?”

Joanna smiled bitterly. “Don’t think so much.”

Later at night, when Serena was watching television, well, not really watching, her mind was actually else where, then suddenly Sam called.

Sometimes I wake up crying at night ……

Serena’s heart sank, and she was a bit surprised too, she then picked up the phone straight away, she thought Sam’s going to tell her that everything that happened was just a prank, they were never true.

“Yep?” Serena said, trying to sound normal.

“What’s going on?” Sam asked casually.

Serena’s jaw dropped, “Shouldn’t I be the one to ask what is happening?” Serena exhaled hard as she glanced up at the ceiling, trying to choke back tears, and then she added, “Why are you ignoring me? What have I done?” Serena’s voice was so watery and was so broken.

Sam took in a deep breathe and said, “Everyone has emotion; it doesn’t have to be you who have done something.” His voice sounded annoyed.

When Serena heard this, her last nerve went high wire as her anger boiled over, and her anger quickly got the better of her.

“Oh, c’mon, tell me what I have done!? You won’t do that without a reason.” I have emotion too! Serena thought. There was a long silent.

“Talk to you later.” Sam said with a slight tremble to his voice as a lone tear trailed down his face. He never wanted to do this. Doing this had broken his heart in half.

“I’m sorry, sweetie.” Sam whispered at the ended line phone.

The next day after school, Sam was with Nancy, Serena saw them walking to the Volvo, laughing happily. She could not stand watching them so happily being together and she was in such a misery. Without second thought she walked to them with quick pace.

“Sam!” Serena shouted, and Sam turned around and Nancy did likewise.

“What’s your deal!?” Nancy asked impatiently.

“This is not about you, Nancy, stay back.” Serena said as she shot her a dead glare.

Sam did not say anything, he just stood there.

“Sam doesn’t want to see you, not to mention talking to you, so stop daydreaming!” Nancy said, and seeing Serena still stood there with no intention to leave, she continued, “You are such a retard, can’t you feel that he doesn’t love you, not at all? You are a lot more stupid that I gave you credit for!” Nancy enjoyed scolding Serena so much, her lips curved into something like a smile.

“SHUT UP, I SAID IT WAS NOT ABOUT YOU!” Serena said word by word as she ran an eye over Nancy, and then turned to Sam.

Nancy looked at her with surprised, she never expected an yelling from Serena.

“Sam, we aren’t any three year-old kids, we have to deal with problems, not running away from it, or do what others wish you to do and then just simply ignore people like she never exists! Say something, will you!” Serena looked at Sam with full attention, but he slowly looked away.

“What the hell are you talking about!? What do you mean by others want Sam to do? He ignores you because he doesn’t like you, that’s all!” Nancy shouted at her.

“You know damn well what I meant.” Serena glared at Nancy and said.

Nancy knew that if she kept on attacking, Sam might give in, “Stay out of the way, Serena Pleasure!” Nancy shouted at Serena as she pushed her out of the way, Sam looked at Nancy as she was pushing her, his eyes wide opened, but he did not do anything.

Nancy turned to Sam and demanded, “Sam, let’s go.”

Sam walked past Serena; she rolled her eyes at him and whispered, “Unbelievable.”

Serena was red in anger at that time but then soon the anger faded and she burst out tears, she wailed. She just could not control it anymore, she kept telling herself not to cry but she couldn’t, she failed. She opened her bag and searched for her cell phone, she rang Joanna right away, she’s so broken, and she couldn’t even say a word.

Later that night, Serena texted Joanna a message:

Joanna,

Everything is over; he never cares about my feeling. But whatever, he never wants to save this relationship, I won’t either. I felt like I’ve been lied to, I won’t get angry with him but never will I care about him. I have no feeling anymore.

Serena,

If you decided to forget about it, then don’t ever mention it again. This is just a little dream, forget about that.

Joanna replied Serena an hour later.

“Can you stop hurting Serena? She doesn’t deserve any of that!” Sam marched into the kitchen and shouted at Nancy after he saw the hurting posts of Nancy and Lax on the net.

“What I said was the truth.” Nancy replied as causal as she could, without bother to look at Sam.

“No, it’s not the truth, she never imagine anything!” Sam said furiously.

“Yes, she does! She thought you love her but you don’t!” Nancy turned around and yelled back.

“I do love her! More than anything!” Sam told her, he looked at Nancy, waiting for her reaction.

“No, no, no, you don’t know what you are saying. Don’t lie to yourself, Sam. I know you.” Nancy shook her head. She could not accept the fact that Sam did love Serena. She kept telling herself that they were not serious and they were not actually together.

“Do you!? You don’t know me, not at all!” Sam said and his index finger pointing at Nancy. He was so red in anger. “I really love Serena, I know you are upset because I’m dating her, Nance, and …I guess I got the reason why, but I just don’t want to believe that,” Sam sighed, “I love you as brother and sister, we are cousins, and we won’t be together!”

“No, you’re wrong, we aren’t cousins, I’m not anybody to you, maybe you never notice, but I’m actually adopted. We are not related.” Nancy said, staring down at the table cloth.

“What? How did this happen?” Sam asked in disbelieve.

“I found out a couple months ago, but it doesn’t matter, because it actually does me good, I can be with you now.” Nancy told Sam.

“Well, no, it still won’t change a thing!” Sam said, surprisingly.

Nancy put the cup that she was holding into the sink, her face become serious. “Why? Why do you treat me as a sister? Even after how happy we are being together all these years?”

“Yeah, together as brother and sister! Never lover!” Sam forced his voice to say even.

“Sam, when I found out that I’m adopted, I knew the feeling I have toward you is not normal, it is love. Didn’t you ever wonder why I am so good to you?” Nancy explained.

Sam looked so lost, he could not believe that. “Gosh, I’m sorry Nance, but I can’t.”

“Is it because of that girl? I will make her back off!” Nancy was determined to waste Serena. She would do anything to make her stay out of the way.

“No, you won’t!” Sam said furiously.

“Yes, I will.” Nancy replied seriously.

“No, because I’m sick of doing what you want me to do, following your orders like a good little solider. I’m not doing anything to break Serena’s heart anymore. And neither can you nor Lax!” Sam named his terms.

“Sam, her heart has already broken. You can’t break a broken heart!” Nancy said, wanted Sam to understand that he had already passed the point of no return.

“Well, but that doesn’t mean I will be with you.” Sam knew he was wrong to do whatever he had done to Serena and he knew that the reason why he did that anyway was because he was the boy which family came first.

“Why are you doing this to me?” Nancy was so confused.

“Why are you doing this to me, why will you make me choose between you two? Nancy, stop it, please.” Sam pleaded.

“No, I love you, Sam.” Nancy told Sam, her eyes on Sam.

Sam licked his lips. “Fine, then I’ll make you a deal.” He took a deep breath and went on. “I’ll tell people that Serena and I have never been together, for your sake, and that’s it, you and I will remain cousins, even as close as brother and sister. But if I ever find out that you are hurting Serena, again, you will be the one to pay the price. And don’t you ask Lax to do it for you, because I’ll make sure he can’t either.”

“What price?” Nancy asked in a low voice, still digesting what Sam said just now.

Sam cleared his throat and answered, “That you will really be nobody to me, not even friends. Deal?”

“Sam, I don’t understand, why?” Nancy wondered.

Sam rolled his eyes and said, “Don’t you see? I’m doing this for you! I can get back with Serena if she forgives me, but I won’t even go and try! I’m putting an end to it! Because I want you to be happy! So, now, Deal or no deal?”

“Deal.” Nancy gave in, nodded.

Sam took a deep breath and said, “Thank you.” his eyes meeting Nancy’s.

Sometimes I wake up crying at night, and sometimes I scream up your……

“Hello?” Serena murmured she was so not in any mood to do anything; her whole mind was with Sam.

“Hey! Sam talked to me on msn just now.” Joanna said with excitement.

“Really?” Serena asked anxiously, “What did he say?” Serena was so eager to know their conversation.

“Sam asked me what’s happening.” Joanna replied. “He asked me what you have told me and asked why you gotta ask all the people about the reason why he is ignoring you.”

“WHAT! I didn’t! How can I ask him when he’s avoiding me?” Suddenly Serena’s cell phone vibrated. “Oh, hang on, Sam sent me a text message.”

Serena pressed the view button and read.

Sorrie for what I’ve said, I just don’t wanna make upset her.

“He said he was sorry for what he had said, he just didn’t wanna upset Nancy.” Serena paused and said, “Excuse me? What have I done?” Serena was now very confused. She wondered herself I didn’t do anything wrong!

“Well, will it be because you are dating Sam?” Joanna asked curiously.

“WHAT! Nancy is upset because I dated Sam!?” Serena yelled at the phone.

“Calm down.” Joanna said, “I’m just suggesting.”

“How am I supposed to calm down? What the hell is wrong with them people! It’s obviously none of their business of me dating Sam!” Serena yelled at the phone and throwing her hands in the air, and then later she started to sob again. “How can he do this? What a lame reason it is! He doesn’t want Nancy to be sad, so what about me? Why I gotta be the one to be sad, huh?”

“Forget about everything, remember? He’s the one who doesn’t treasure you. He’s not worth it! Don’t you ever shed a tear because of him ever again, he doesn’t even know! What’s the point of that?”

Serena cleared her throat, “Joanna, I feel so bad. Things were so weird all of a sudden; everything is spinning out of control.”

“We will always support you. You know that.” Joanna promised.

“Thank you.” Serena said, she really appreciated her friend’s support.

“Have a good sleep, don’t think anymore, I’ll see you tomorrow ok?”

“Ok night.” Serena then hanged up.
