Chapter 1

September 2007

It was having a terrible downpour in that morning, and there was serious traffic congestion. Serena Pleasure was getting late for school. She glanced at the watch impatiently, it said, 8:13, there were only two more minutes before the bell at the school would ring.

“Damn it!” She cursed under her breath and grabbed her bag, released the seat belt, and threw open the door of the passenger seat.

Dad, I’ll walk, I’m gonna be late for sitting in the car any longer. See ya.” Serena looked around and crossed the street. It was just three blocks away from school, if she started to run, there would be a chance that she could make it in time.

That was the first week of High School; she was not going to be late! Serena ran block after block without bothered knocking people off.

Bang!

Crashing with a motorcycle was the last thing Serena needed that moment. The Physics, Chemistry and Biology books scattered over the ground.

“Oh Gosh!” Serena muttered, she looked around, people were staring at her, but none of them offered any help!

How warm was this world!

Serena got up painfully. That was just awesome, just so nice.

“Oh, my knees hurt!” she picked up the books and immediately started to run again. No way would she be late for school in her life!

The moment Serena reached the school gate, the bell rang.

Thank God. Serena thought.

Even though the rain had stopped, the ground was still slippery, Serena was walking real slow, tried not to fall over twice in a row. She walked up to the classroom and cursed under her breath, why it has to be on the 4th floor? Anyone care about someone may fall over and can’t really make it?

No matter how painful her knees hurt, she just had to suck it up. Serena walked up, step by step; the pain was so intense that every movement caused her to bit her lips hard. Finally what seemed like forever, Serena reached the fourth floor, she pushed opened the door and got into the classroom; she walked unsteadily to her usual seat by the window and dropped her bag on the table and put the books down on the table casually. She was wondering what to do next and then a name flickered over her head.

Sam Parker.

Serena smiled bitterly and then walked towards Sam. He was a few months older than Serena; he had a strong body compare to the kid of his age, with blond hair, a pair of azure eyes that you could never take your eyes off them and every time he smiled, the adorable dimples appeared in his perfectly cheeks made you could not resist. He was sitting on the table, dressed in a plain black polo shirt that was stretched perfectly over his body, and with his pair of Calvin Klein jeans just made him beyond words. He was, without a doubt, the most attractive human being Serena had ever lay eyes on.

Sam was stunning.

He was chatting with Lax, Sam’s kindergarten friend, he was a little shorter than Sam, about 6 feet, he had dark brown hair and pale brown eyes, he looked like Korean but he was actually American, unlike Sam, he was wearing Lucky Brand jeans, and a white tee-shirt on top.

Faith, one of Serena’s good friends this year, she was so nice and sweet, yet very bossy. She looked up from her book and she was stunned.

“Oh my god, Serena! What happened? Are you okay!?” she asked as Serena walked passed her. But Serena was too tired to reply her; and she put up her hand and waved her off, she then walked straight to Sam. She could smell his cologne meters away.

“Sam, can you go to the restroom with me, please?” Serena whispered over his shoulder.

Sam turned around to look at Serena. She was beautiful. The most wonderful creature that he’d ever seen. She was dressed in an H&M black striped skirt, on top was a simple but gorgeous white tee-shirt with the words I love you on it. The clothes were not special at all but having them on Serena Pleasure was just way too nice. A 5feet 4’’ tall beautiful girl with gorgeous hazel eyes which could have men all tripped over to charm her the moment she was spotted. The light brown hair was always carrying the wonderful smell of Victoria’s Secret shampoo. She’s perfect; she had everything that a lady should have.

But there was something not quite right about her today when Sam laid eyes on her.

Sam gasped when he noticed how pale she looked. Serena had fair skin which made her looked even more beautiful but today it was not the normal fair skin, it was pale.

“What the hell! Are you all right?” He looked straight into her eyes with his gorgeous azure eyes. Serena blinked; she loved the way Sam looked at her. “Hey, you with me?” When Sam asked again, she then realized that she did not reply his question.

“Yeah, I’m with you.” Without delay Sam put his hand around her waist to give her support.

“What’s happened?” Sam asked with concern in his eyes.

“Fell over, that’s what’s happened.” Serena said; was already hurried on the way to the washroom.

Sam called to make sure there was no one in the girl’s washroom before walking Serena in. She walked to the sink and turned on the tap, washing her hands she was leading against the wall for support. Sam reached for the tissue from his pocket and wet it.

Let me help you.” Sam offered, bending down and cleaned the wounds gently. Serena’s knee jerked when the water made contact with the wound, and with a whine and a groan.

Sam started, “You know what? Serena, that’s bad,” he said, pointing at the wounds. “You need a doctor to have a look at this!”

Serena’s eyes flew from the wounds to Sam, she looked so innocent at that very moment; she was nothing more than a three year-old kid who did not want to do as she was told, but still Sam insisted, his serious blue eyes, looking straight into her eyes, she could not say no.

Sam put her arm around her shoulder and helped her walked to the clinic; his gripped never loosen a little.

“Oh gosh, don’t do this again.” Sam’s heart sank, he felt so uncomfortable when seeing Serena hurt like this.

Serena stared at him with surprised; “You think I wanted this?” she said and shook her head.

“Nononono, I didn’t mean that.” Sam immediately said and trying to make Serena understand. She looked at him, half-smiled. Sam helped her walked down each step slowly, with his grip on her arm tightly.

*

“Excuse me; we need some help in here.” Sam knocked at the door of the school clinic which was surprisingly crowded that day, he pushed it opened.

The doctor turned around, and she said, “Oh, one more, students always fall over in rainy days.” The doctor shook her head. Serena looked at her and bit her lips.

The doctor signaled Serena to take a seat. Sam helped her to sit on the bed, never letting his hand off Serena’s. Her hand stayed in his.

“OK, now let me clean the wounds first, it won’t hurt at all. Just relax.” The doctor said and Serena just nodded.

“I wish…” Serena murmured, she bit her lower lip when the alcohol was in contact with her skin.

It won’t hurt? It’s so friggin’ painful, it’s beyond words! Serena thought.

Sam felt the sudden grabbed, he knew Serena must be in a lot of pain, grabbing his hand that tight; he looked at her with sympathy.

“It’s not going to hurt.” The doctor smiled and continued to clean the wound with the alcohol, but Serena was not buying what she said, her knees felt like on fire. No matter how nice the doctor’s smile seemed to be, it just appeared as an evil smile to Serena.

When it was the iodine’s turned, Serena’s face had the OH MY GOSH imprinted on her. She felt like she was going to pass out, and she wished she could. The pain was unbearable; she really wanted to run out of that little scary clinic. But there was no way she could do that, she could only turn away, tried not to look at what the doctor was doing.

Sam felt Serena trembling, and he hurry moved closer and had Serena’s head buried in his torso. Sam carded his finger through her hair, “It’s ok, I’m here,” Sam soothed as his hand moved from her head to rub her shoulder. Serena replied with a slight nod; she kept on grabbing him so tightly, not even loosen him for a second.

Finally what seemed like forever, the nightmare was over, “OK. It’s done.” the doctor said, “It’s not that painful, right?”

Serena let out a breath and realized that she had been clutching Sam’s hand so tightly that his fingers were white. She looked up at Sam and gave him an it-is-so-not-true look and then forced a smile at the doctor.

If that’s not painful, then what is? Serena asked to herself. Sam was still holding her hands as he thanked the doctor.

“Oh, one more thing, don’t walk so much today.” The doctor reminded Serena when they were walking out of the clinic.

Before Serena got what the doctor was talking about, Sam already said, “But she gotta walk up to the classroom.” Wondered he looked at the doctor.

“You two can take the lift over the corner of the playground.” Sam smiled and thanked the doctor again, and then he helped Serena out of the clinic.

When they were walking to the lift which was at the very far corner of the building, Sam felt Serena was leading more on him, trying to get as much support as she could, “Are you okay? You’re shaking!” Sam asked as he was stabling Serena, he did not let go of her wrist, his grip only got tighter.

Serena licked her lower lips and said, “Do I look like I’m okay?” She chewed her lips as Sam smirked.

Chapter 2

September 2007

Going to class was not a happy thing already and waking up in the morning with an injured knee, everything was just worse. Serena took a sick leave in the morning; she did not have to strength to walk to the school which was just ten minutes away from her dorm and not to mention of driving there herself. She spent the morning chatting on msn with Nancy Parker. Nancy was the same age as her; she was a student in the Western High which was a sister school with West High. She was just like any other schoolgirl; there was nothing special about her.

Nancy and Sam were cousins but people always mistaken them as sister and brother. They were so closed that if they did not tell, no one would think that they were just cousins but not siblings.

Serena and Sam were once in the same class for almost every subject and because of that she got to know Nancy during the birthday party of Sam and they had been friends for two years.

Serena would have to go to Faith’s apartment in the afternoon after school to continue to work on the Geography presentation. Sam had insisted on Serena to stay in her dorm and they would be fine without her but she just kept on saying no. Sam tried everything, but all he got was NO. At last, Sam gave in but under one condition, Serena had to do it his way. She had to agree on Sam waiting for her and go up to the apartment with her. She was happy that Sam cared so much about her but that did not mean she want him 24/7, she was not disable for god’s sake! Serena loved to have Sam around and it was always so much fun but sometimes she just did not want him to see the weak side of her, however it seemed like it was destined that he would see all of them.

“Hey!” Sam greeted and rushed to Serena as soon as he saw her coming.

Serena walked slowly to him, trying hard not to put any pressure of her injured leg. “Hey, Sam!” she greeted with a smile. Sam put his arm around her waist at once and Serena never rejected. Together they walked into the building.

*

Serena inhaled and exhaled quickly, “Are you tired?” Sam asked when they reached the third floor.

“Do you really want me to answer that?” Serena looked at him with wide eyes.

Sam laughed as he had his other hand on Serena’s shoulder to give her support, “Right, my bad.”

Serena bit her lips and complained, “Why the lift has to be out of order today!” Sam laughed ignoring the dead glared Serena threw at him.

*

“Shouldn’t we put the map on the second slide? I mean, just right before the population bar chart? I think this can help people to have a better knowledge of the place.” Faith suggested, putting down her cup of caffeine. It was already 9 at night; they had been working on the project for hours.

“What do you think?” Lax asked, shaking Joanna awake who was dozing off on the couch. Her head snapped up and looked at him, then shrugged.

“Well, I think Faith’s right, we have to make the presentation interesting and more importantly it has to be impressive, it has to be something that people will think it’s cool.” Sam said, and standing up to stretch his legs.

“Yeah I think we have to have the map placed before everything.” Serena continued and Sam turned to look at her and they both smiled.

“Thanks Sam, Serena.” Faith said and then turned to Lax and Joanna. “You two,” Faith said as she pointed at Lax and Joanna, “Why don’t you go wash your face? You two look like walking dead.”

Lax and Joanna looked at each other, feeling embarrassed.

“Uh…can we have a break?” Joanna asked, yawning.

“Yah, we really can use a break.” Lax added and put up his fake smile.

Faith shook her head, impatiently, “Ok, fine. You two can’t do much help like that.” She looked at her watch and added, “Why don’t we come back here at 9:40?”

“Thanks!” Joanna and Lax said together and jumped up from their seat and left the room.

Faith turned to face Sam and Serena, “You guys don’t wanna grab something to eat?” Faith asked as she was looking for her clean t-shirt and pants, planning to take a shower to refresh a bit.

“Nah, we’re fine here.” Sam said, and Serena nodded in agreement.

“OK.” Faith said and walked to the bathroom, leaving Sam and Serena alone in the house.

The sound of shower was heard. Serena immediately made use of the break to read her book, she had been reading it before coming to work on the presentation, and it was just a torture to put the book down since it was so great! She was so absorbed into the book when all of a sudden she heard Sam muttered and she was snapped out from the book.

“Ugh!” Sam mumbled abruptly as he buried his head in the hands and gently rubbing his temple in circle.

Serena putted down the book and turned to look at him with concerned and asked, “Are you okay?”

Sam looked up at Serena and said, “I’m okay, you know, stupid headache.” he tried to hide how uncomfortable that he was feeling. Serena nodded and continued to read. Sam sighed and reached for his pocket and searched for the bottle of painkiller, he always had it with him; he had been having so many annoying headaches since last year. He removed the child-proof lid and popped three white pills into the mouth, and he swallowed it dry. He closed his eyes and hoped the sound of Faith’s shower would lure him to sleep.

The air- conditioner made Faith’s room as cold as living in the North Pole. Serena was shivering and finally she stopped reading, she could not concentrate in reading when she was that cold.

“Gee, it’s so cold in here.” Serena complained and rubbing her arms, trying to warm herself.

Sam opened his eyes and turned to Serena, “Do you wanna sit on the bed? It’ll be warmer.” he asked and patting on the bed next to him, Serena looked at him for a second and then nodded. She walked slowly to the bed with her wounded knee and climbed in carefully. Together they crowded under the warm blanket.

“How’s the headache?” Serena asked, titled her head a bit to look at Sam.

“Better, I took some painkillers just now.” Sam said and ran his hand across his hair.

“Good.” Serena smiled and looked to the other side. She stared at the window for a while thinking of whether she should start a chat with Sam but he had been so quiet so she just got back to her book.

Sam was way too tired to talk about anything; the aspirin was not really doing its job. Or maybe the meds were now having no effects to him because he had taken way too much. Right now he wished he was dead so he did not have to torture by the damn headache.

They had been sitting there without talking for almost half an hour. Serena was reading her book and finally had fallen asleep with her head resting on Sam’s shoulder not long after she returned to her book. Sam pulled the cover up to her cheek and he picked up the book.

“One night stand, huh.” Sam smirked and put it on the table which was just next to him. Serena woke up just as he placed the book of the table.

“Oh, did I wake you?” Sam asked, feeling guilty.

“Nonono, you didn’t.” Serena said eyes never left Sam’s; they looked straight into each other’s eyes. She had the sudden urge to kiss him, his soft lips, they were so tempting. Serena stretched her face up to his and he bent down toward hers. Sam held her shoulder and had her closer to his chest. His eyes were just inches away from Serena; they locked eyes for a long moment. Her heart was bumping faster than ever, she was trying to control her breath, hoping it would not sound too labored. They were moving closer than a while ago, Sam titled his head and lead forward and Serena did likewise. Suddenly their lips were touching each other. His tongue touched hers, his hands found their ways under the covers and were on her waist and he pulled her closer; his mouth was gentle.

“Hey, Serena?” Faith asked as she was walking out of the bathroom.

Sam and Serena pulled away at once, “Yeah?” she replied and got off the bed and walked to her without taking a look at Sam; she was confused at that moment. Sam kissed her or she kissed Sam? Or they did it as the same time? She knew she had been attracted to Sam since the start of the year but she never knew that he was as well; he would never kiss back if he was not attracted to her the same way she did. Serena had a feeling that their friendship would soon change into something else.

“Where’s Joanna and Lax? Have they come back?” Faith asked, drying her hair with a towel.

“Nope.”

Faith sighed loudly and just as she picked up the phone, the front door opened, “We’re back!” Joanna said happily. She walked into the room with Lax followed behind.

“Great, then let’s continue!” Faith said and sat in front of the laptop once again.

Sam and Serena had not been talking after the second round of the work. Sam had been sneaking glances at Serena, and she had been trying to avoid meeting his eyes. Her cheek was blushed all the time. Sam was surprised by what happened just now. To be honest, he was happy about it. He liked Serena, he had felt for Serena for a while, and he felt that Serena did like him too. He smiled to himself happily. But something was bothering him, what if they did not work out and it would be really awkward. What if Serena just wanted to be friends with him? What if she chose to stay away from him after tonight? If these things happened, the kiss would be the end of everything before it started and he would hate himself for ruining everything.

“So. Sam what do you think?” Faith asked, and everyone turned to look at him. They had been talking about the content of the culture part, but obviously Sam was not listening.

“Uh…sorry, I wasn’t with you.” Sam said, half-smiled.

Gosh. Sam tried so hard to ignore that fact that he had one major crush on Serena but it was way too hard.

Faith sighed, “It’s a long night, I don’t think we can’t really do anything right now, maybe we should go home and have some eye shut.”

“Yeah, I think so.” Sam said, his headache had died down a bit but now it was coming back.

“Alright, then that’s it for tonight.” Faith said.

Serena stood up from the couch and then walked out of the room to retrieve her bag. She said bye to everyone and left. She was so tired, and her mind was kind of confused with whatever happened just now. She so needed a hot shower and a good night sleep.

“I’ll see you guys tomorrow.” Sam said and ran after Serena.

“Hey! Serena!” he said, and walked to her. “Anyone come to pick you up?” Sam asked, and stretched his head.

Serena turned around and looked at him, she felt weird after kissing Sam but she was happy about it on the other hand, so she might as well try to act normal.

It’s not a big deal; one kiss doesn’t mean the start of a relationship, at least not right away right? Serena told herself.

Sam waited for her to speak, “Nah, I’m going back to the dorm.” Serena told him, usually Serena stayed at the school dormitory, but she would go back home during weekend.

“Then are you walking back to the dorm?” Sam asked; he wanted to be with Serena a little longer.

“Uh, yeah, obviously, there won’t be any bus at this time of night.” Serena recalled, she looked around, trying not to make any eye contact with him in case something happened again.

“Let me drive you back, I don’t want you to have ANY accident again.” Sam laughed and helped Serena walked down the stairs. He held her hand but Serena did not shake it off, her hand stayed in his.

“Hey, step by step, you don’t wanna roll off the stairs.” Sam teased; his azure eyes looked gorgeous, they could look right through your soul. Serena was clutching his hand so tightly that his fingers were white, but Sam did not say a word.

Serena blinked a few times, she could not take her eyes off Sam; she was petrified for a while and finally snapped out of it and backed to reality. His eyes really could have people dazzled.

Gosh I really like Sam. Serena thought, she wanted to say it out loud but of course she did not.

“Yeah, it’s just, you know, walking up was so much better than walking down!” Serena complained. The last thing Serena wanted was to fall over!

*

“Oh, I’m so tired!” Sam said as he walked to the couch and collapsed on it.

“How’s the presentation going?” Nancy asked and she next down next to him.

“Slow.” Sam answered with his eyes closed. And all he could see was Serena’s smiling face and the so blushed face after the kiss.

“How’s Serena? I chatted with her on msn this morning.” Nancy asked, he opened his eyes and turned his head to look at her.

“She’s ok, much better. I drove her back to the dorm just now.” Sam was again recalling how cool it was just now, chatting happily with Serena in the car, they laughed so much. Hearing the laugher of Serena was already the joy of the season. He remembered kissing her in Faith’s room, which was the best part of the night. He wanted to be with Serena. Sam smirked but when Nancy was looking at him like he was some kind of lunatic, he quickly hide his smile with a huge yawned.

She looked at him with a shake of her head, “Why don’t you go grab a shower and hit the sack?” Nancy suggested, switching off the television.

“Yeah, I think I have to.” Sam said and pushed himself from the couch, “G’ night.” He said and walked to his bathroom. Nancy cleared up the living room a bit and also went to sleep. Tomorrow would be tough again.

Chapter 3

September 2007

It’s Friday! But this was so not a happy one. Serena, Sam, Joanna, they were having regular lessons at school and the classes were so boring the entire day, none of the class was interesting. Serena was so not in any good mood because she could not even move an inch during the class because every time she did, her knees hurt, and it just made everything worst. She could just sit still, and this made every class even more boring, and also she had to walk to different classroom after each class and that made her mood get worse.

“Hey,” Sam whispered hoping he would not be caught by Mr. Wilson of him talking in class, disturbing the other as what he loved to say.

Serena turned around, “Yeah?” she was glad that there was someone to talk to, the class had her bored out of her head

Sam led forward and whispered again, “What’s your next class?”

Serena was stealing glances at Mr. Wilson, and once when he had his back to Serena, she turned around and whispered back, “Biology. What about you?”

“Same, I’ll walk you there.” Sam smiled. Serena looked at him and nodded with thank you. Serena was glad that after the kiss episode, they were still friends, nothing had changed, yet. She had been worried about the kiss would ruin whatever they had right now, but she was relieved that everything was cool.

After school, Serena went for the Year Book photo shot, and after that they got to work on the Geography presentation again which was due to Monday. Serena would go walk for half an hour alone afterwards to Lax’s dorm. Luckily, her dad had given her permit to rent a car this year, so she would not have any problem of getting there.

Serena took a shower before going to Lax’s dorm; she grabbed her bag and set off. She was walking to the parking lot to get the car and she found that she had three missed calls from Sam.

Serena plugged in the headphone and speed dial Sam at once.

“Hey what’s up?” Serena said sliding in the driver’s seat with caution, not wanting to put pressure on the knee which was now finally healing; she fastened the seatbelt and started the car.

“Oh, yeah, I was trying to tell you that Lax won’t be at his dorm until 7. Um…..are you on your way?”

“Yeah.” Serena said and drove to the direction of Lax’s dorm. Sam heard Serena signed.

“How about you call me when you get there?”

“Ok, sure.” Serena then hung up. Lax was always like that. Damn Lax!! Serena thought.

*

Serena climbed out of the Porsche as Sam waved in the other side of the street; he looked around and crossed the road.

“Hey.” Serena said with a smile danced on her lips.

Sam chuckled, “So are you better now?” he asked and nodded at the car behind Serena.

“Yeah, at least I have no problem with driving. Save me a lot of time to get here.” Serena said, closing the driver’s seat door. “Well, Lax is at not home, so what are we going to do now?” Serena asked, walking down the street with Sam.

Sam thought for a second and asked, “Wanna have a grub? I don’t think you have your dinner, right?”

Serena shook her head.

“Good, let’s go then.” Suddenly Sam stopped, turned around and said, “I got bad news.”

Serena looked at him, confused, “What?”

Sam smiled and said, “The restaurants are all on the top of the hill….so….there will be stairs….” He smirked.

“I can drive but that doesn’t mean I can do stairs! Why am I so lucky!?” Sam smirked when hearing Serena said that.

*

“Two.” Sam told the waiter.

“This way, please.” The waiter guided them to the table next to the piano. “Any drinks?” The waiter asked, putting the menu down on the table.

“Just water, thanks.” Sam said, the waiter nodded and walked away.

“What do you wanna eat?” Sam asked Serena but put out one finger, telling Serena not to say it. “Ah, wait, let me guess, cheese burger with extra cheese?”

Serena smiled and said, “Bingo! You know me!”

Sam smirked, “I always know you.”

Sam made an airily gesture and the waiter walked to him.

“Are you ready?” The waiter asked politely.

“Yeah.”

“What can I get you?” The waiter asked.

“Can we have two cheese burgers, one with extra chesses and one with extra onions and two cokes?” Sam ordered and then handed the menu to the waiter.

“Is that all?” asked the waiter.

“Yeah, that’s all, thanks.”

The waiter wrote down the orders and said, “Your food will be here in just a minute.”

Serena was sitting there, waiting for her food. She really liked to be with Sam and that was just really cool. Sam was a funny guy sometimes, and he was just so caring, to everyone which made Serena so confused about so many things. She was not really sure about Sam. Did Sam love her? Or he was just acting what he did to all the others. However, there was one thing that could prove Sam treated her different and which bothered her a lot.

The kiss.

Sam would never kiss her unless he liked her. But why didnt he talking about that kiss anymore. If he liked her, he should have said something. But why didnt he!? She was so confused and she was determined to find out, but she wondered how. She could not just ask Sam directly, it would be incredibly awkward when Sam told her yes. Besides, she did not want to ruin the wonderful time that she had with him; she wanted to think it as Sam-was-into-her thought.

“Hey.” Sam waved a hand in front of her and she snapped out of her thought.

“Yeah?”

“What’re you thinking?” Sam asked and took huge mouthful of his coke.

“Oh, nothing. I’m just daydreaming.” Serena said and faked a smile. She was not daydreaming, she was really thinking, she wanted to ask Sam so much, but she knew she would never get the answer because she would never ask. She sighed, and then ate her burger; it was going to be a long dinner.

After finished eating, they walked down the stairs and heading to Lax’s house. Sam’s hand was itching to hold Serena’s when walking down the streets but he could not in case he would scare her off. Sam could only put his arm around Serena’s, carefully supporting her so she would not trip.

“Do you mind me doing this?” Sam turned to look at Serena and asked. Their eyes were locked for a few seconds, there was always a force emitted from Sam’s eyes that made Serena could not speak.

Finally, after a long moment, Serena replied with a smile, “Sure. It’s okay, as long as you like it.”

Sam was glad that she did not mind, after the kiss, he thought of Serena every single night; he could not stop thinking about her. He knew he was in love with Serena.
